Welcome to all things design and genetics!

Check out the FAQ at the bottom of this journal! If you are new to ARPGs, and are confused, that's the spot for you!

BASE COATS

BASE COATS

iv/um/onx/gal

In Shi'vali, we have five base coats- IvoryBeigeUmberOnyx, and Galaxy (starting from common to rare). Base coats are what color the Shi'vali will be under all of its markings.

In our base coat swatches, we will display the acceptable range for the coat and markings that follow.

Guide by tulua

This is the format our swatches follow. Please be sure when you pick a BASE COAT color, you only use the middle range! The bordering ranges are for markings only.

The thin bars (not the marking rnage) that span across the base coat range is to help you see the gradients! They are the lightest and darkest value of the base coat color.

GALAXY BASE

Galaxy Update by Shivali-Lorekeeper

Galaxy Base Guide

Galaxy follows it's own special rules and comes with a very wide range of hues and values. There are some very specific rules that make this base unique, so please look at the comprehensive guide linked above!

G E N E R A L

MANE, EARS, and TAIL

Your mane, ears, and tail can be any color lighter or darker relative to your base coat. Alternatively, it can be the same color as your base coat. Check the Guide for further information! (click above)

FLESH

Flesh (being tongue, paw pads, nose, etc.) may either be blue-chow or any natural color, examples can be found in the guide.

EYE COLOR

Your eyecolor may be any semi-saturated shade of red, blue, purple, green, yellow, orange, or silver. Pupil must remain black. Further information can be found in the guide.

MARKINGS ON CHERUBIAN
Ranges for every marking that bleeds into the Cherubian mutation wings.

F R E E M A R K S

These are markings that can be added to any Shi'vali. They should not show up in the genotype or phenotype, and therefore, are non-hereditary.

ACCENTS

A white marking on the face that can resemble any natural shape. Please see our natural marking guide.

BASE COLOR GRADIENT

Your basecolor must be from the provided swatches above, however, you may slightly gradient the coat as long as it does not resemble the gene Ombre or Pangare. Do Not select colors from other shi'vali, use the sliders only!

ALTERATIONS

Note: only one base alteration can be passed to offspring.

RUSSIAN (nRu RuRu)
Changes the base coat into a blue. Also tints markings to be a darker blue. The saturation is dependent on the specific base color.

Changes the base to green, with a clouded overlay on top.

JASPER
Erythrism + Stonetouched
When a geno has both Erythrism and Stonetouched, they create a new base called Jasper.

LAVENDER
Erythrism + Russian
When a geno has both Erythrism and Russian, they create a new base called Lavender.

STRAWBERRY CREME
Erythrism + Creme
When a geno has both Erythrism and Creme, they create a new base called Strawberry Creme.

H E R E D I T A R Y

M U T A T I O N S

MELANISM (+Mel +MEL)

Swatches

Darkens the entire base.

ERYTHRISM (+Ery +EryEry)

Swatches

Creates a reddish pigmentation in the coat and markings.
This is considered a hereditary mutation of the base Umber and Onyx. In a genotype, it will read as "iv/Um/Onx/gal" (or the dominant forms of the basecoat), and make a patchy/marbled effect (you can choose either/or). Please check out our guide on it!

N O N -

H E R E D I T A R Y

M U T A T I O N S

ALBINO [ALBINO]
A white base that hides all markings that otherwise would show. Can leave some areas pink/tan.

CHIMERIC [CHIMERISM]
A mutation that creates two sides of a genotype. When designing, creates patches, showing both sides of the geno.

FRACTURED [FRACTURED]
Fractured is an extreme form of piebald ranging over nearly the whole body save for the paws and head.

INTERACTIONS

OVEROPLOOSA
Overo + Appaloosa
The holes of Appaloosa instead show inside of Overo.

JUNGLE
Clouded + Brindle
Normal clouded spots sit on top of the body, and gradually stretch to appear more linear towards the underside. Fading down to brindle, stripes extend out of normal range onto leg, tail and face.

BENGAL
Rosette + Lashed
Two genes together combine into a much bolder stripe makings. Lashed stripes are bolder along the top of the body, thinning along the limbs and underside.

SPADE
Clouded + Lashed
Two genes together combine into a much bolder tiger stripe making. Lashed stripes are bolder along the top of the body, thinning along the limbs and underside. Like clouded, 'filled in' stripes appear most heavily along the top, and become smaller and less frequent on the underside.

KING CLOUDED
Rosette + Clouded
When a geno has both Rosette and Clouded, the markings collide and form large, blotchy spots and some elongate into stripes, with three large stripes running from the back of the neck to the rump.

OCELOT

Tabby + Clouded
A strong mixture between the textured swirls and striping of tabby with the full eyespots of color found in clouded, combining to resemble and ocelot in form.

HURRICANE
Tabby + Lashed
Much like the Uzamaki variant of tabby and brindle, tabby and lashed combine to form the same swirl on the flank, but with a noted difference.

UZUMAKI

Tabby + Brindle
Creates a highly visible signature swirl of striping along the flank and barrel.

SWAMP
Clouded + Brindle
Creates thick and heavy textured stripes with patches of filling where they part.

DESERT
Tabby + Lashed + Brindle
A triple interaction that creates a striking and unique striping pattern of thick and thin textured swirling stripes

MACKEREL
Lashed + Brindle
A thinner, more linear and textured version of Lashed.

SPOOK

Rosette + Brindle

A thicker and more heavily textured brindle that form fish-hook shaped rosettes.

SPIDER
Lashed + Python
A thinner, and elongated interaction of Python

MORPH
Rosette + Tabby
Create signature spiraling rosettes that stem from thick tabby stripes

TANCHO
Albino + Koi
Albino and koi in a phenotype will result in a single red dot to appear on the forehead.

SUN SHAFT
Dapples + Roan + Brindle

A triple interaction that creates an effect like sunlight streaming through a forest canopy.

BLUE BLOOD
Contra + Blush
Tints blush into shades of blue

THEATRE
 Mask + Kabuki
Makes Kabuki a heavier mask-like marking that covers the majority of the face with an intricate pattern.

CONSTELLATION
Stardust + Galaxy base
Allows for constellations to be drawn from the stars on the shi.

FAQ & THE MORE YOU KNOW

Saturation vs Hue vs Value

SATURATION

Saturation defines a range from pure color (100%) to gray (0%) at a constant lightness level. A pure color is fully saturated. So, saturation determines how vibrant your colors will be in terms of pure color to gray (no color at all).

HUE

Hue defines the actual color- for example, the hue of a Stonetouched Shi'vali would be "green".

VALUE

Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color.

Q: What does design have to do with genetics?

A: Good question! In our ARPG, every cub two parents make have their own set of genetics. The genetics, defined as a "phenotype" and "genotype" tell what the cub will physically look like.

Q: What's a Genotype/Phenotype, and what are the differences?

A: Genotype is the genetic code; the acronyms like "Iv" for Ivory, or "+Ery" for Erythrism. Phenotype describes the written, readable information of the genotype.
Genotype: Iv/um/onx/gal/+Ery/nMo
Phenotype: Ivory Moonkissed with Erythrism

Q: Can I modify the saturation of my base coat?

A: You must keep it within the given saturation of the color swatches, so no.

Hello! I just had a quick question.

If you were to get the base Umber, would you be able to use one part of the main Umbra swatch for the body and another part of the main umbra swatch for the mane? Or are you stuck to a single swatch?
